Everyday Woman

If you want to know
what an everyday woman feels like,
crumble a homemade cookie,
you’ll find the battling smell of her heart
between the crumbs, fresh
but still holding on to the oven.

If you want to know
what an everyday woman feels like
spend an afternoon peeling oranges with her,
you’ll slowly learn to grow trees
if you picked up the right seeds she left behind.

If you want to know
what an everyday woman feels like
listen to her quiet walk,
you’ll find the rhythm of her footsteps
matching yours, when you clumsily step
out of your skin and try to trace your way back.

If you want to know
what an everyday woman feels like
do not dive into the shallow edges of the pool,
her whispers are in the deeper side
drowning under water, but still trying to learn

to swim
on their own.
