Why Do You Ask?

You ask me
why my name is not written
in block letters on the temples of your mind
on churches and cathedrals
hollow with no one to sing hymns for me,
no one to take my name
pray for your good health,
and sometimes mine too
and so
no one to carve my name
on the gravestone
where I died.

I tell you
it’s because
there are only so many things
we can remember
and none of the lives
when we’ve lived them in lies.
